I began practicing yoga 20+ years ago...

I was looking for an exercise with stretching because I had back pain.

I liked it because it combined all the things I loved. Exercise, the body, spirituality, philosophy, the mind, the thoughts, physics, and energy.

The Yoga I chose was Iyengar Yoga which is an alignment based approach and it emphasizes the Asana practice or the poses.

I quickly learned that Yoga doesn’t just address the physical body, it also addresses 4 other bodies. The ancient humans of India figured out a system that considers 5 Koshas or sheaths or bodies. The 8 limbs of Yoga work to keep all the Koshas healthy and in balance.

In Yoga Studios we are mostly taught asana, which is only one limb of the practice.

The eight limbs are Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi.

I was introduced to the Yamas and Niyamas (10 philosophical themes) as well as Pranayama (breathwork) very early in my practice.

I studied the 10 philosophical themes and looked at them closely in my own life and realized how much awareness they brought to my system (my overall human being).

They taught me to listen, pay attention, and observe my thoughts and actions.

Breathwork talk me to regulate my system, particularly my nervous system.

After decades of teaching asana, I am thrilled to be bringing in all the limbs of yoga and really diving deep into them, especially the Yamas, Niyamas, and Pranayama.

The study of these limbs helps us to understand how we relate to ourselves and to others and how each action that we take has an affect on ourselves and/or others.

I have created an online yoga program where we will be talking about the Whole of Yoga.
